Embracing Mistakes: Lessons learned from writing and publishing
As writers and publishers, we often strive for perfection in our craft, seeking to create flawless works that resonate with our audience. However, the reality is that mistakes are an inevitable part of the creative process. In this blog post, we’ll explore the valuable lessons learned from the mistakes made in writing and publishing.
Embracing Imperfection It’s essential to recognize that mistakes are not failures but opportunities for growth and learning. Every misstep offers valuable insights that can shape and refine our skills as writers and publishers. By embracing imperfection, we create space for creativity, experimentation, and innovation in our work.
Timing is Everything One of the common mistakes in publishing is misjudging the timing of a release. Whether it’s rushing to meet a deadline or missing out on a strategic opportunity, timing plays a crucial role in the success of a book. The timing, in publishing, is challenging to get right. If the book needs to be released on a specific day then the files need to be completely done at least a month in advanced. It is really important to see your book in proof format before it actually goes out to the public. This can also add time to the process.
The Price of Pricing Errors The price of a book really needs to be determined by the cost of the book. How much does the book cost to print, ship, and distribute. In order to provide wholesale pricing the book still has to be profitable at a 55% discount. Knowing those factors can help to determine the actual costs involved so an accurate price for the book can be set.
Navigating Formatting Fiascos Formatting mistakes can be a source of frustration for both authors and publishers, leading to formatting errors in the final product. Knowing what platform you’d like to publish your book on will really help at this step. If you know in advanced where you want to publish you can find out the exact requirements for your files. Each platform will give you their requirements and tips to help you meet them.

Size Matters: The Importance of Choosing the Right Format Selecting the right format and size for a book is essential for both aesthetic appeal and reader experience. I recommend actually pulling out a measuring tape and measuring your favorite books. What do you want your book to feel like when you hold it in your hands? Once you know this number you will be able to use the tools in the links above to start formatting your manuscript or communicating with your book formatter.
