Marketing with Heart: Monica Miller on Building Brands, Avoiding Burnout & Selling More Books

When Monica Miller was 12, she told herself she was going to be a famous author. While the “famous” part didn’t come overnight, the dream of writing never left her. Over the years, Monica has written and published eight books, ranging from journals and devotionals to nonfiction and even a coloring book. Today, she channels that same passion into helping other authors find their voices and market their books effectively.

On the Project Seed Money Podcast, Monica shared her journey into writing, her love for fantasy (her next big project), and the lessons she’s learned as a marketing coach for authors.

Why Marketing Should Start Early

Monica is quick to emphasize that marketing doesn’t begin after the book is done. “Start the moment you type your first sentence,” she says. Too many authors wait until the book is nearly finished — only to find they have no audience when launch day arrives.

Building a brand takes time, and it’s about more than just selling books. It’s about creating excitement, showing your behind-the-scenes process, and inviting readers into your journey. “When people feel part of your story, they want to buy the book — and every book after that.”

From Bland to Bold Messaging

One of Monica’s specialties is helping authors avoid the trap of becoming “bland” online. She noticed that many of her clients were powerful and passionate in their books, but when it came to social media, their voices became flat and uninteresting.

“That’s where I come in,” she says. “I help them tell their stories in a way that’s engaging, personal, and true to their personality. People buy from people, and if you’re boring online, you’ll lose your readers.”

Red Flags in the Marketing Industry

Monica also offers important advice for authors considering hiring a marketing coach. The biggest red flag? Overpromising.

“If someone tells you they’ll make you an Amazon bestseller in 30 days, run,” she warns. “Yes, quick wins are possible, but sustainable success comes from building a loyal fan base. I’d rather have quality readers than just numbers.”

Other red flags include a lack of clarity on services, no accountability systems, and no support in creating social media content. A good coach, she stresses, will tailor the strategy to your life and energy, not force a one-size-fits-all plan.

Encouragement for Stuck Writers

For authors sitting on the fence or battling writer’s block, Monica’s advice is refreshingly simple: take a break. Step away for a few days, reconnect with activities you love, or read books in your favorite genre to spark new ideas.

And her surprising confession? Some of her best ideas for scenes come to her while sitting in church. Inspiration, she reminds us, often comes when you least expect it.

Building for the Long Game

At the heart of Monica’s message is this: writing a book makes you a business owner. Your book is your product, and your brand is what keeps readers coming back.

“It’s not just about this book,” she says. “It’s about creating a foundation so people are excited for the next book, the next offer, the next chapter.”

For any author wondering when to start, her advice couldn’t be clearer: start now.
